Champion Doug Sanders' 1967 Doral Open Invitational Large Winner's Trophy - 18th PGA Win

The 'Peacock of the Fairways' Doug Sanders was on-brand at the 1967 Doral Open Invitational, both with his dress and finish atop the scoreboard to notch Sanders' 18th PGA Tour victory - bringing home this very trophy! That scene was painted with a typewriter brush of imagery and inside-the-ropes 'Sports Illustrated' journalistic prowess. "Wearing white shirt, white gloves and white shoes, with purple slacks and orchid socks," announced Doral's press agents on one day of play, "Doug carried a blue tee behind his ear. Walking toward his second shot, he applied suntan lotion to his face. After wiping his hands on a towel, he picked up some sand to eliminate the grease from the suntan lotion." Sports Illustrated writer Mark Mulvoy described in the March 13, 1967 magazine issue. Doug Sanders notched his 18th PGA victory for his second win of the tournament, propelling to his spot on the 1967 United States Ryder Cup team.

Before you is Doug Sanders' prize for the hard work of defeating the tour field and narrowly beating out major champions and Ryder Cup contestants including Jack Nicklaus, who would go on to make Doral his home decades later. The silver-tone nameplates of the tiered figural golfer carry the engraving "Doral Open - Winner Doug Sanders" along with "Doral Country Club - Miami, Florida - First Place - March 5, 1967 - Presented By The Florida Development Commission." The Official Florida State Seal medallion is to the left of the Florida outline on the right side. The inventory sticker specific to The Doug Sanders Museum can still be found affixed to the verso of this impressive oversize trophy. 34" x 9" x 6"
