1918 National Golf Links Sterling Silver United War Work Fund Golf Cup 2nd Prize Won By Frank Hearne - Presented by C.B. Macdonald

While we have had a smattering of Tiffany & Company National Golf Links Sterling Silver trophy cups of this elegant yet purposefully simple design with the ultra exclusive club's emblem in shallow relief, including bookending years from 1916 and 1919, this is the first that was presented by C.B. MacDonald himself as engraved! This award was held by MacDonald and presented to Frank Hearne on Nov. 6 1918. Hearne's score was 116 - 42 = 74. It is hallmarked appropriately 'Tiffany & Co. Makers 23044. Sterling Silver 925-2000 M.' C.B. Macdonald was a major figure in early American golf. He built the first 18-hole course in the United States in Saint Andrews Golf Club, heavily influenced the founding of the United States Golf Association and victoried the first U.S. Amateur championship, while also co-founding the National Golf Links of America which opened in 1909. Collaborating with Seth Raynor, MacDonald would make the prized links-style Southampton course his life's working going forward. This WWI period trophy is engraved '2nd Prize - United War Work Fund - Golf Cup - Won by - Frank Hearne - Nov. 6, 1918 - 116-42= 74 - Presented by - Mr. Chas. B. MacDonald." 5" 203 grams

Ralph H. Martin Collection

Highly accomplished business professional Ralph H. Martin started as a rocket scientist for the US military, then being an officer with the Naval Reserve in WWII prior to going on to be an engineer and executive. He was deeply passionate about golf with six holes-in-ones to his name and the astute collection with focus categories of antique golf clubs, silver, prints and books. The High School Valedictorian Martin was a member of more than five golf clubs including: the Willoughby Golf Club of Stuart, Florida and The Ridge Club of Sandwich, Massachusetts, with previously holding memberships at the Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, Florida; the Card Sound Golf Club, Key Largo, Florida; the Hartford Golf Club, West Hartford, Connecticut; and the Canoe Brook Country Club, Summit, New Jersey. Shooting his age on several occasions, he was a member of the Southern Seniors Golf Association and had a fine eye for patent clubs and the equally coveted 'long-noses' dating back decades into the 19th century. It is with The Golf Auction's honor that we share Martin's collection of hand-chosen pieces with the collecting public, such as the one in this lot.
