Byron Nelson Signed 1939 US Open at Philadelphia CC Official Program
An incredible find, Champion Lord Byron Nelson has signed the front cover of this seldom seen example of the 1939 US Open at Philadelphia Country Club program in pleasing black marker. It was a tightly contested event, giving the City of Brotherly love a three-player 18 hole playoff. This easily could have been expanded to four or won outright by Sam Snead who took an eight on the final hole of play. In attendance that day on the deciding 72nd hole (for Snead) was golfing legend, Bobby Jones. In the playoff, Byron Nelson and Craig Wood each shot 68 to eliminate Denny Shute who carded 76. This setup a second playoff the following day highlighted by Byron holing out a 215 yard one iron on the fourth hole for eagle to pace his 70-73 win over Wood. In blazing black marker is 'Best Wishes - Byron Nelson.' The late rancher from Texas was so happy to sign the program he underlined his name not wanting to let go of the "n." The only other example of this elusive program signed by Nelson we have seen was the hardbound production variant with wear along the binding inside the front cover that still achieved $3,959 on 11 bids. There is expected slight cover wear of edging and on binder along with some creasing to right edge and minute paper loss on the top back cover corner. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity (ALOA) comes with this lot.
