Bobby Riggs Personal Irons, Putter & Woods w/Bag Tags in Personal Golf Bag
While the phrase is tossed around, 'The Battle of the Sexes' Bobby Riggs vs Billie Jean King in 1973 for $100,000 brought in 50 million viewers and even more significantly brought acceptance to women's tennis and sport. The Houston Astrodome staged Riggs, 55-years-old, vs. Jean King, 29-years-old, bout would be won in straight sets by Jean King 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Interest in the result was only heightened by Riggs' chauvinistic build up wearing and holding bright yellow and red 'Sugar Daddy' branding and largely unfiltered interviews. The controversial tennis star that finished his career 838-326 and captured the 1939 Wimbledon, 1939 and 1941 US Open grand slam singles wins and three more doubles or mixed doubles.
Remarkably, sourced from The Babe and George Zaharias Foundation and the course in which they ran in Tampa, Florida is this full set of circa 1973 Wilson Staff Dynapower irons, Wilson Staff woods and a Ram Bel Air mallet putter in Bobby Riggs' hand painted personal grey bag. Included are carious 1970's celebrity golf tournament bag tags from those in which he participated and used these clubs/bag in. A signed letter from the foundation's founder Hal Shaw will accompany this lot.
