Bobby Jones W. Douglas Macleod 1930 Grand Slam Anniversary Edition 21/200 Etching w/ Original Box
This lot features an etching on acid-free conservation paper depicting Robert Tyre "Bobby" Jones Jr. after the original 1930 copper plate by Scottish artist W. Douglas Macleod (1892-1963). The portrait shows Jones at St. Andrews in his golfing attire, holding a bag of clubs with the Royal and Ancient Clubhouse visible in the background. The intaglio print displays a clear rectangular plate mark and fine linear detail characteristic of the etching technique. The lower margin of the plate includes inscribed text reading AMERICAN OPEN GOLF CHAMPION R. T. BOBBY JONES BRITISH OPEN CHAMPION 1930 and AMERICAN AMATEUR CHAMPION BRITISH AMATEUR CHAMPION. An in-plate signature at the bottom left of the image reads W. Douglas Macleod St. Andrews 1930. In the lower margin, the print is hand-numbered 21/200 in pencil at the left and bears the pencil initials O.E.C. at the right.
Accompanying the print is a detailed biographical information sheet and certificate of authenticity signed O. & J. Cubbage, dated July 1990. The document states that the original copper plate was unearthed in an antique shop and this limited edition was released at the Open in St. Andrews to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Jones's 1930 Grand Slam. The print is housed in its original United States Golf Association (USGA) cardboard shipping folder, which retains an adhesive label from the USGA Golf House Order Dept. in Far Hills, New Jersey, dated 08/16/92. 13" x 19".
