Bobby Jones Signed 1967 Typed Letter with Birthday Appreciation Content
Bobby Jones unquestionably had a more playful side behind some closed doors, as we have noticed in multiple written letters handled, it just was not often put on public display often. And rightfully so, as winning high-pressure golf tournaments and conducting The Masters are jobs that couldn't be taken lightly. His health also made it difficult. This letter on his personal law firm letterhead, dictated by Jones through his assistant Jean Marshall's typewriter from three days after his 65th trip around the sun: "You were thoughtful to remember me on my birthday with that beautiful arrangement of greenery with the magnificent shamrock and the cute little leprechaun peeping out from among the leaves. I think we shall enjoy it for some time to come. With all good wishes and many thanks. Affectionately, Bob." As a good friend of the Atlanta couple Mr. and Mrs. James Riley, Jones signed off with simply his first name in blue ballpoint pen in March 20, 1967. It was just two weeks before The Masters week would begin for 1967, Jones also writing the still included 'Conduct, Customs and Etiquette' for that Spectator Guide and Masters series badge (note on back that would be on the next several). Add a personal note from and signed by Augusta National founder and Grand Slam champion Bobby Jones with the winning bid on this lot. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity (ALOA) comes with this lot.
