Bobby Jones Original 16x20 George Pietzcker Photograph, Circa 1930 - Rare
Presented in this extraordinary lot is one of the finest golf photographs that we have seen to date. A number of attributes were factored in culmination for the deservingly high praise of this George Pietzcker photograph hobby entrant. This phenomenal George Pietzcker oversized 'Photograph Find of the Year' textured and thick photograph bearing Jones' name and a notation to a 1934 and 1935 Masters contestant. It reads: "To a real guy and a great golfer 'Bill' Schwartz from 'Bobby' Jones" in flowing ink in the work's upper left-hand corner. Bill Schwartz played in Jones' 1934 (T18) and 1935 Masters Tournaments then referred to as The Augusta National Invitation Tournament as mentioned, along with the 1933 and 1934 US Open. The consignor's relation to Schwartz stays within the game, as her father took lessons from Bill. This prized Pietzcker photo measures a massive 15 7/8" x 19 7/8." Crystal clear is this image believed to be captured in the historic 1930, when Bobby Jones' captured the unprecedented impregnable quadrilateral - victories at both the US Open and Open, US Amateur and British Amateur.
The highly acclaimed camera eye which captured this still was George Pietzcker, the preeminent golf photographer from St. Louis, who covered the game from the early 1910's until the mid 1930's. During this period he was the official photographer for the United States Golf Association (USGA) creating a visual record of the country's national championships and champions. The time-period signature and notation in the upper left corner has not been authenticated as that by Bobby Jones, therefore we are marketing this piece as simply an original George Pietzcker, circa 1930, photograph of the highest quality. This incredible large format photograph carries the stylized Pietzcker white ink trademark in the bottom right corner with matching handwritten font with the centered 'Robt. T. Jones.' This same photo is proudly displayed on the wall of Augusta National Golf Club's Crow's Nest, highlighting for the amateur residents the most admirable of their rank, Robert T. Jones Jr. Advanced golf collections finely assembled with a discerning eye open only for the best of the best have long pined for an oversize Bobby Jones 'Pietzcker' and here it is!
