Bobby Clampett's 1978 Sun Devil Phoenix Thunderbird Golf Classic Individual 3rd Place Silver Tray
While Bobby Clampett would lead his BYU team to victory at the 1978 Sun Devil Phoenix Thunderbird Classic, Clampett's third place individual silver-tone tray here would be his best finish until his individual AND team victory in 1980. BYU dominated the tournament, winning in 1975, 1976, 1978, 1980, 1982 and 1986. The iconic Thunderbird logo is engraved prominently on Clampett's award in this lot. 'Sun Devil - Phoenix Thunderbird Golf Classic' is carefully engraved across the top of the tray with 'Individual 3rd Place' the bottom and the year of '1978' bookending the revered logo in shallow relief.
Derived from American Indian Symbols this medallion represents the organization, The Thunderbirds, which serve as the civic organization that organizes the tournament and does much of the work surrounding it. With only a handful over 50 active members, who have been asked to join (similar to membership at the Augusta National) being a member of The Thunderbirds is one of the highest honors a resident of Phoenix can achieve. These members proudly were the medallion which is emblematic of continuous civic pride and unrivaled success.11" x 11"A signed letter from Mr. Clampett will accompany this lot.
Simplifying the golf swing while instructing a diverse group of golfers through both his authored 'Impact Zone' books and lessons comes second nature to Bobby Clampett, now teaching and residing in Naples, Florida - as he mastered the swing as a player himself. The 1979 Masters and 1978 US Open Low Amateur honoree, the BYU alumni where he was a two-time Fred Haskins Award, is a Hall of Famer there as well as in the California and Utah Golf Hall of Fames. CBS Broadcaster for The Masters and Turner Sports, The Bobby Clampett Collection has been curated over decades of participating in the highest form of competition and is proudly offered here.
