Big 3, Champ Boros & Field Signed 1963 U.S. Open at The Country Club of Brookline Ensemble Piece
The Country Club at Brookline just outside Boston was a stern test used to determine the U.S. Open champion in 1963. Compounding the difficulty factor was in those days rounds three and four were both played on Saturday, and the weather was the real challenge with wind gusts reaching 50 m.p.h. If that was not enough the tightly bunched leaderboard following 72 holes resulted in a three way tie between Jacky Cupit, Arnold Palmer and Julius Boros. In the Sunday playoff it was the seasoned professional Boros who claimed the title for his second of three career Majors. Working the locker room at The Country Club that week was a local man by the name of Kermit Kimball (newspaper blurb of his work appears as accoutrement to this piece). With elite access to the participants Kimball was able to assemble signatures from over half the field penned neatly on four 3x5's along with four separate sheets of paper. These items are joined in display by small photos of Arnold Palmer and Gary Player (Please note Gary Player signature is a facsimile). The top portion of this deluxe framed measuring x ensemble bears a complete listing of participants in the 1963 Open with each autograph present being notated by a yellow mark. With this in mind we will only highlight some of the autographs contained that include Julius Boros, Jacky Cupit, Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Vic Ghezzi, Cary Middlecoff, Jack Nicklaus and Dow Finsterwald to name a few. There is some duplication of signers with Ed Furgol, Doug Ford, Art Wall and Billy Maxwell, etc. autographing twice each. Truly this piece presents as a whose, who of the top players of the day. With a nod only to Ben Hogan who did not participate that year. Gary Player photo is facsimile signed and not in his hand.
