Betty Skelton's Personal Wilson Babe Zaharias Irons, Woods & Putter in Bag
One of Babe’s unfulfilled dreams was learning to fly solo with her own awarded pilot’s license! This will be a new
episode in the greatest woman’s athlete all times outstanding life. Enter another female of notable fame, Betty
Skelton, the first lady of firsts" much like Babe, this woman was the queen of speed." That involved autos, boats
and anything that had to do with acceleration, it was only a matter of time before these two met up and became
life long friends that formed a pact. Babe, being the older of the two, suggested they teach each other their keys to
learning from years of experience how to fly and how to play golf. Babe supplied Betty with a new set of ‘The Babe’
Wilson golf clubs, shoes and other items like balls, gloves, etc. Betty furnished a plane, its fuel, and any other
expenses. These two became very close along with their husbands who played second fiddle to Babe and Betty’s
conversations. Upon hearing about Babe’s illness, Betty recommended they halt the flying until Babe and her
doctors allowed her future activities. While Betty Skelton was going full bore, she was in high demand as her bio
clearly records and her golfing had to take a back seat. She also realized Big George was going through a rough
time without his unflappable Babe. After Betty heard he was doing better and spending time with some of Babe’s
friends on the LPGA tour, she gave Big George a call to see if it would be alright if she and her husband Donald
dropped by for a visit and Big George said they were welcome anytime. George had been following Betty’s
dynamic career with great interest much like Babe’s. The night of the visitation Betty had an idea, maybe it was the
holy spirit, she carried along this treasured set of golf clubs and after all the catching up on each other’s lives she
asked Donald to bring the clubs inside where she presented them to Big George explaining how she missed all the
teaching, learning, practicing and playing these clubs had witnessed and that she wanted Big George to have them
in his home so that every time he saw them he would reminisce about Babe and Betty, the two remarkable
dynamos in his life. A signed letter from the founder of the Zaharias Golf Foundation, Hal Shaw, will accompany this lot. 34" - 41 1/2"
