Arnold, Wife Winnie & Father Deke Palmer Signed Augusta Stationary Purportedly w/ Penciled Diagram of 1958 Masters Rules Controversy
It is understandable that many people have Arnold Palmer as their hero. This trio contains the signature of A.P. and also two of 'the King's' heroes in wife, Winnie (D-'99) and father, Deke (D-'76). This item is a fragment of vintage stationery featuring the three 'Palmer Clan' signatures in pencil. Even better yet, our consignor, longtime 18th hole Score Reporter at The Masters Robert Rickman recounted the story of finding out the purported story behind the sketch. Rickman stated that he was told by his mother-in-law, who was a Masters faithful, that she received this when the Palmers were sitting on the patio after the 1958 Masters final round when an imbedded ball of Arnie's on hole 12 created a rules controversy that Palmer himself diagramed in pencil on this Phoenix Company out of Augusta, GA stationary prior to signing it with his father and wife. Palmer played the embedded ball for a double bogey, but was later able to use his provisional to card a par. Venturi would never win, but Palmer did and this piece's new home will. It cries out to be framed with the cover of June 6, 1967 issue of Sports Illustrated which featured Winnie and Arnold Palmer. The paper is cream-colored and contains printed text on the left side for the Phoenix Printing Company located at 745 Ellis Street in Augusta, Georgia. James Spence Authentication has reviewed these signatures, and their Auction Letter of Authenticity comes with this item.
