Arnold Palmer's Personal c.1984 Used Golden Standard II Forged Pitching Wedge
Without question Arnold Palmer was 'The Golden Standard' in the way a professional golfer should conduct him or herself in front of the fans, media, competition and even caddy - while still tough sometimes on the latter. He also played his signature 'The Golden Standard II' pitching wedge in the early to mid-1980's, presented in this offering. 35 1/2"
Arnold Palmer's personal wedge here was handed from 'The King' to 13-year caddy, and our consignor, Royce Nielson in 1984 - not long after Nielson's hiring. The pitching wedge exhibits welcomed signs of use by the seven-time major winner with 62 wins on the PGA Tour and another 10 on the Champions Tour, but certainly not abuse. Key in on the bottom edge of the wedge aggressively ground, hammer marks on the hosel, strike marks on the face and the electrical tape is found on the end of the worn Neumann cowhide leather grip - letters of the branding still remaining in gold. The muscle backs with the stylized 'Palmer' filled with black paint is located toward the toe. 'Forged' is in matching gold also on the bottom level below the step down. While his clubs were never fit for a king before he got them in the shop, Palmer made sure that this personal example and the others he hit (which remain in his Latrobe, PA barn) would be after some machine work and elbow grease. A signed letter of provenance from Royce Nielson comes with this lot.
