Arnold Palmer's Personal Game Used Toney Penna Persimmon Mod 2 GS Driver

A club tinkered with to satisfaction by the King! Featured here is Arnold Palmer's personally game used museum-grade early-mid 1970’s Toney Penna Persimmon Graphite Shafted Driver. The club shows excellent game use - all by Palmer himself. From the personal collection of Ron Lucas, former Head Golf Professional at Latrobe Country Club who obtained this game used Driver from Arnold during his tenure as golf professional at LCC.

Arnold's obsession with getting his clubs just right has been well-chronicled - putting in the same hard work in his shop that he exhibited on the course. In the case of his personal Penna Driver in this lot, unskilled spray can paint markings (an unofficial signature of Palmer’s work) can be seen on or near the face and crown of the head and the addition of lead tape applied by Arnold for that custom swing weight he desired - all are evident when examining the listing photos of the club before you. Arnold also personally and completely painted the head (to hide the Toney Penna label and insert) so onlookers would not see he was playing a Penna driver instead of his own AP brand. He also re-gripped this driver using oversized (1/32”) hand wrapped leather for his large hands to caress the the shaft with ease.

This club’s origin comes from Ron Lucas, longtime caddy in the 1960’s at Latrobe C.C. and subsequent Head Golf Professional at Latrobe Country Club from 1978-1981. Ron would frequently work on Arnold’s personal clubs during his tenure at Latrobe C.C. Ron, a master clubmaker himself, also serves as founder and president of Pro Golf Club Manufacturing and has also worked on clubs for tour players Lanny Wadkins, Ben Crenshaw, John Mahaffey and Chi Chi Rodriguez, among others, over the years.

A Letter of Authenticity from Ron Lucas will accompany this Club in which Ron will certify this Driver belonged to, was worked on and was used by Arnold Palmer. 42 1/2"
