Arnold Palmer's Personal 1960-61 Match Used Pitching Wedge Given to LCC Pro Ron Lucas w/Letter
A club fit for a King, tinkered with to satisfaction by The King! Arnold Palmer's personal game used museum-grade 1960-1961 Wilson W/S Staff Dyna-Powered 'Arnold Palmer' Staff Model Pitching Wedge. Reg. #61D2125 is proudly offered here and it’s time for Arnie's Army to assemble! Prominently stamped on this muscle back using an array of typefaces, each uppercase with the exception of the patented Wilson script. Largest in size is the decrescendo 'Dyna-Powered' font centered from the toe. Just below the bump-out is the all-important 'ARNOLD PALMER' signifying ownership by and craftsmanship for 'The King.' 'Staff Model' in red is just above it. The club shows excellent game use - all by Palmer himself.
Arnold's obsession with getting his clubs what he considered to be just right has been well-chronicled - putting in the same hard work that he put into his golf game was paralleled in his shop. In the case of his personal pitching wedge in this lot, vice marks (an unofficial signature of Palmer’s work) can be seen around the hosel. Arnie always used electrical tape back in the day after re-gripping a club - also evident when examining the listing photos of the club before you. "For Arnold, it’s all about how a club feels in his hand on that particular day, not how he played the day before. He was constantly fiddling with his clubs to create the ‘feel’ he desired," Arnold Palmer website states.
This club’s origin comes from Ron Lucas, longtime caddy in the 1960’s at Latrobe C.C. and subsequent Head Golf Professional at Latrobe Country Club from 1978-1981. Ron would frequently work on Arnold’s personal clubs during his tenure at Latrobe C.C. Ron, a master clubmaker himself, also serves as founder and president of Pro Golf Club Manufacturing and has also worked on clubs for tour players Lanny Wadkins, Ben Crenshaw, John Mahaffey and Chi Chi Rodriguez, among others, over the years. This club was produced by Wilson during Arnold’s final years of playing Wilson prior to the creation of The Arnold Palmer Golf Company. 35 1/4"
A Letter of Authenticity from Ron Lucas will accompany this Club in which Ron will certify this Wedge belonged to and was used by Arnold Palmer.
