As far as the tournament with the president's namesake, it would be missed. “In the many years when there was no such thing as a PGA Tour event in the state, the (Jerry Ford Invitational) was the next-best thing, with a twist. For 20 years, 1977 through 1996, some of the best golfers in the world — along with a stellar list of celebrities — came to the Vail Valley for a couple of days of golf and fun. Among the winners of the event were Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf and Craig Stadler.
