Amos & Andys' (Gosden & Correll) Irons, Woods & Putters in Bags
These perfect strangers met up in Durham North Carolina in 1921. For the next forty years they entertained America via
the radio and television starting out on Chicago’s WEBH. That’s where they were at a party and met the high flying
1932 Olympic record setting dynamic Babe Didrickson Zaharias and her soon to be husband George Zaharias. It’s
ironic that Chicago has become the hub for Babe’s hotbed of golfing activity due to the Wilson Sporting Goods
Company factory being in Chicago and supplying Babe with her golf equipment over the years. It was also during
these years that Freeman and Charles decided to try their hands at golf. They, especially Freeman were hooked
and with several of his influential friends became a member of the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club, home of
the Masters. It’s here that he becomes close friends with Clifford Roberts and Dwight Eisenhower.
Fast forward to Babe and Big George receiving a phone call from Freeman asking if they would be free for a
afternoon of golf at their newly acquired and renovated golf facilities in North Tampa. Previously Forest Hills
Country Club, now renamed Tampa Golf and Country Club. It’s early December and perfect conditions for golf, Big
George calls them back and sets date and time for a round with food and drinks to follow. Babe knows that
Freeman enjoys a friendly wager, so she sets up her game plan, she’ll agree to play all three men’s best ball and
loser forfeits their clubs, all the bets, plus drinks and dinner at the Spanish Park restaurant in Ybor City. Babe shot a
cool 66 and collected all the wagers and clubs including Big George’s.
