Al Geiberger was long known on the PGA Tour as a solid player who excelled on "Tough Courses". When a flash flood caused course damage to Columbine C.C., the scheduled site of the 1966 Golden Anniversary PGA Championship, the event was switched to Firestone Country Club. This change fit right into the mindset of Geiberger as Firestone was the site of his 1965 win in the American Golf Classic. It also was a "Tough Course" playing even more difficult with mid-summer difficulties on the greens. A perfect setting for Geiberger who held a four stroke lead going into the back nine of the final round. That was the final margin of victory as Geiberger at 280 even par was the only player who the challenging course did not beat into an over-par score. This lot offers the Championship scorecard as used by Geiberger issued by the PGA, carried and filled out that day by tour veteran Frank Beard comes duly signed in 10/10 pencil by Scorer Beard and Contestant Al Geiberger. It bears Al's personal marks of acknowledgment above each score (x for bogey, o birdie and a check for par). The 1:20 starting tee time, as well as his winning total score of 280 is calculated in the upper right-hand corner. The official scorecard bears consistent use from traveling 18 holes around the course with Beard. This includes a crease between hole 4 and 5 on card. This only helps to solidify game use and display value of this treasured item. Letter of Provenance from PGA of America Historian comes with this lot. This Championship scorecard did have the accompanying photo from the post win '66 on course press conference attached to the reverse at one time. It was later removed from the backing, resulting in paper loss to reverse of scorecard and photo. In photo, a jar of peanut butter is clearly shown in reference to peanut butter sandwiches that Geiberger munched for stamina throughout his rounds of play in the Championship.
