After Lemuel Francis Abbott, To the Society of Goffers at Blackheath Framed Color Print
A framed color print after the 1790 painting by Lemuel Francis Abbott titled The Blackheath Golfer. The work depicts William Innes, Captain of the Society of Goffers at Blackheath, standing in a red uniform coat and bicorne hat holding a golf club, accompanied by a caddie carrying multiple clubs. The background features a verdant landscape with a windmill and a distant manor house. The print is a modern reproduction, likely an offset lithograph, presenting the image with a full color palette and integrated text in the lower margin.
The margin contains several printed inscriptions. Centered at the bottom is the title TO THE SOCIETY OF GOFFERS AT BLACKHEATH followed by a dedication: This Plate is with just Respect Dedicated by Their most humble Servant Lemuel Francis Abbott. To the lower left is the text Painted by L. F. Abbott 1790 and to the lower right is the credit from the Engraving by V. Green Mezzotinto Engraver to his Majesty & to the Elector Palatine.
The print is housed in a stained wood frame with a gold-tone inner fillet and a cream-colored mat. A small rectangular brass-colored plaque is mounted to the bottom center of the frame, which reads WM. INNES CAPTAIN 1778. The reverse of the frame is sealed with a brown paper dust cover and fitted with a hanging wire. An adhesive white label on the upper right of the backing paper bears the handwritten alphanumeric characters EP 804 / 305 (5)..
