A.W. Tillinghast 1931 Signed Handwritten Letter on Letterhead to Colonel Otto Probst - May 20th
Proudly presented here is an exquisite offering from the golf architecture category - A.W. Tillinghast Signed 1931 correspondence on his personal letterhead to Colonel Otto Probst. Tillinghast was helping source books for Probst's publication collection. Mentioned is the complete edition of Golf Illustrated from April 1914 to then present day becoming a tough acquisition in 1931, with the owner Tillinghast knew asking $300 as then the sole complete set known. Tillinghast finishes his missive that includes a quick early reference of Cobble Valley Golf (Tillinghast's work) with 'If you care to advise me of any old 'golf book' you want I think I may be able to lay hands on them."
From Baltusrol, Winged Foot Golf Club and Newport Country Club, to Ridgewood CC in this case, fabled course architect A.W. Tillinghast's masterpieces totaled more than 265 golf courses when his career completed. Tillinghast in 2015 became the 6th golf course architect in history to be inducted into the Golf Course Hall of Fame in the Life Time Achievement category. Signed by Tillinghast in flowing time-period ink on May 20th, 1931, that scarce signature is inked at the conclusion of the Tillinghast hand-written letter on his 'A.W. Tillinghast Golf Course Architect Harrington Park, New Jersey' letterhead. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity (ALOA) comes with this lot.
