A Collection of Vintage Golf Photography and Historical Ephemera

This collection comprises various vintage golf-related photographs and ephemera dating from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. Included is a historical reproduction of a photograph described as the first taken of a golf game in the United States, depicting the first green at St. Andrews in Yonkers, New York, in 1888. This print features an attached typed description and is stamped on the reverse from John Durant of New Lisbon, New York. A notable original black and white photograph captures three generations of the Thomson family—William Donald, Percy W., and Eric D.—at their Pinehurst home. The reverse of this photograph includes handwritten identifications and a copyright stamp for Rotofotos Incorporated, Photographic Illustrators, 480 Lexington Avenue, New York City. The lot also includes multiple dark gray scrapbook leaves containing original sepia-toned and black and white images of golfers in period attire, such as tweed jackets and long skirts. One leaf features handwritten notations for Artichoke Bed and Old Custom House Monterey on the reverse, while another contains a 1901 Easter Sunday photograph of a stone chapel. Also present is a photo-montage print titled Across England in 612 Shots, documenting a 1965 charity match for Guide Dogs for the Blind with participating archers and golfers named. Other photographs include a large sepia-toned image of a golfer in knickerbockers with a grazing cow in the background, tournament crowd scenes, and individual action shots of golfers.
