A Collection of Curtiss-Wright Flying Service Aerial Photographs, Maps, and Site Documentation, 1930-1931 - Miller Collection
This lot consists of an assortment of vintage aerial and ground-level photographs, engineering maps, and related project documentation primarily documenting land development in the early 1930s. The collection features oblique aerial survey photography and site-specific records for locations in New York and the Kansas City region.
The photographic material includes several black and white prints of suburban landscapes, golf courses, and agricultural tracts. A group of these prints are mounted on or accompanied by heavy brown paper backing sheets. Several prints bear a purple stamped credit on the verso reading CURTISS WRIGHT FLYING SERVICE, INC. Aerial Survey Division 350 West 31st Street, N. Y. C. The backing folders feature printed headers from the CURTISS FLYING SERVICE PHOTO DIVISION and include handwritten data tables for dates, names, and pricing. Specific notations identify a General view of site for Bayside Links and Fort Totten taken 1 hour before start of construction on March 18, 1931, as well as the site under construction on March 27, 1931.
The collection also includes three printed maps titled MAP OF POSSIBLE WATER CONNECTIONS TO PROPERTY OF R.L. NAFZIGER, dated May 17, 1930. The maps identify Wendell P. Miller as the engineer and depict the Overland District near the Kansas and Missouri border, including landmarks such as the Milburn Golf and Country Club and Indian Hills Country Club. These maps feature hand-drawn red and blue colored lines indicating proposed infrastructure. Additionally, a typed label attached to a photo backing documents a drainage project for an athletic field at a private golf course in Kansas City, Missouri, for owner J.J. Lynn, dated September 20, 1924, listing Wendell P. Miller as the engineer and Nelson Brothers as the contractor. Other ground-level photographs show a clubhouse exterior, a golf green with a figure, and a municipal-style water tower..
