A Collection of 29 Vintage Sports and Golf Magazines Including 1936 Sports Illustrated and Early 1960s The U.S. Golfer
This collection consists of 29 vintage magazines focused on golf and general athletics. The lot includes 8 issues of Sports Illustrated and The American Golfer from 1936, which represent an early iteration of the publication prior to its 1954 relaunch. The 1936 monthly issues present are January, February, March, April, June, August, September, and October. These magazines feature various sports on the covers including skiing, bobsledding, pole vaulting, and golf. The October issue features a baseball-themed cartoon by Syd Hoff.
The group also includes 21 issues of The U.S. Golfer: The National Magazine for Amateur Golfers and Club Pros. This run includes 4 issues from 1961 (August, October, November, December), 10 issues from 1962 (January through August, October, and November), 6 issues from 1963 (February, March, April, July, August, December), and the March 1964 issue. These publications document the careers of notable golfers such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Mickey Wright, Billy Joe Patton, and Horton Smith, and feature coverage of The Masters tournament and amateur championship events. Many covers bear original mailing labels or stamps addressed to the Palos Verdes Golf Club in California or Harold A. Dawson of Los Angeles.
