1989 Ryder Cup at The Belfry Trophy Awarded to PGA President Gary Schaal

Unreservedly stunning and endlessly intricate is this gold plated official 1989 Ryder Cup Trophy showcasing the master craftsman engravings of Payne Stewart and the eleven other United States player and Captain Ray Floyd facsimile signatures wrapped around the matching gold plated plinth band. Centered is the stacked ' Gary Schaal - The Belfry - 1989' on this seldom seen prize only issued to players, captains and PGA Presidents. Trophy recipient Gary Schaal would be elected PGA of America President in 1993, after serving as National Secretary and Vice President, and offered his leadership and experience to Team USA during the 1989 Ryder Cup. Schaal was elected into the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame in 2007, a Caolinas Section member starting in 1976 and recipient of the section's PGA Golf Professional of the Year in 1985 and their Horton Smith Award in 1978 and 1980. Difficult to look away from, this Ryder Cup exudes excellence in the classic trophy design that Samuel Ryder began in 1927. Precious metal makers marks are found upon examination on the bowl and at the bottom of the band. "The Ryder Cup" is also carefully added to the back side of the bowl in stylized deep engraving.

This contest represented only the second Ryder Cup matches that ended in a draw, with the European team retaining the cup after their victory in 1987. The United States won the final four matches to tie up the overall contest at 14-14. This example of the prestigious dual-handled trophy with a removable top, similar to Payne Stewart's player version for instance, is 12" tall including the five-tiered wooden base. This example remains in excellent condition shortly after celebrating its its 25th year anniversary, as depicted in lot photos. This centerpiece is deserving of inclusion in the finest golf collections of the world, be it private or that of institutional or public nature.
