1971 US Open At Merion Marshall Hat Hole 14 with Trevino Photo

One of the most famous shots not only of Lee Trevino, but in all of golf is not golf-related at all. Just before the 1971 US Open at Merion in which Trevino would defeat Jack Nicklaus, Trevino pulled the rubber snake trick while holding a hatchet and wearing a Marshall's pith helmet with the 'snake' dangling off of his iron. It lightened the mood, and as previously mentioned Trevino would prevail over his on again off again rival Jack Nicklaus. This specific 1971 US Open Marshall hat, similar to the one that Trevino wore that day, was the hole 14 blue hat that was worn by current Merion Golf Club historian John Caper's father-in-law Ted Bateman as hand notated in ink on the leather. 'Ted Bateman - St Davids - John Capers - Father-In-Law.' The memorable moment is captured in the black and white photo, also included in the lot.
