1971 Barratt & Co Ltd Jack Nicklaus Famous Sportsmen Rookie Card PSA 8 NM-MT
A search in the PSA population report reveals what we had assumed for this red-hot UK-based rookie card of the Golden Bear; less than 500 examples entered on the site 55 years since print. Compared to other luminaries of their sport such as Pele, Ali and certainly Jordan or Mantle - likely the top "base" rookie card in golf Jack Nicklaus' option is a bargain. PSA took a liking to this example, awarding it a NM-MT 8 and leaving only 44 higher (9's no 10's).
To the high-end golf card collectors' delight, showcased here is that Jack Nicklaus iconic 1971 Barratt & Co. rookie card! This PSA 8 golf card category staple's photography features a framed, full-length time-period shot of Nicklaus post-swing surrounded by an interested gallery. Out of the 'Famous Sportsman' Barratt & Co. Ltd series covering all of sport would be Jack Nicklaus' FIRST card, predating the high print run of Jack's 1981 Donruss Card by 10 years. Needless to say the hobby entrant from across the pond is significantly harder to come by. The relatively narrow white border inaugural entrant from 18-time major champion depicts the yellow sweater-clad Nicklaus following through. This London, England tough card's condition should be judged favorably, closely depicted in the accompanying lot photos. The investment grade card runs in the four digits (!); and for the first card of a gentleman that won the most major championships of all-time - a bargain. A staple in golf collecting - add it this auction.
