1959 Seminole GC The Latham R. Reed Sterling Silver Winner's Trophy Tray Won by Arnold Palmer & other

Surely one of the finest engravings on any awarded trophy has to be the name Arnold Palmer, if even just taking into account what he did for the sport of golf. Couple that with the fact that these prizes are not made available to the public and you have this winner's trophy sterling silver tray hailing from Seminole Golf Club. A single year after his first Masters Tournament, he was part of this winning pro-am team at the historically rich club in Florida.

Introducing Seminole's Pro-Amateur tournament with a comparison to Bing Crosby's in Pebble Beach is higher than high praise - but when the professionals take a helicopter in, step out and answer to names like "Arnold Palmer" it fits just fine. The Latham R. Reed was not to be taken lightly, and the participating amateurs from the corner offices certainly did not, with skyrocketing handicaps that were a combination of the tough Seminole course and teeth rattling nerves. Leading publication Sports Illustrated included an article named "Millionaires and Pros" in their April 7, 1958 issue: "This was no ordinary pro-am, however; it was the Seminole. Or to be more specific, it was "The Latham R. Reed Amateur-Professional Tournament" at the Seminole Golf Club, one of the flossiest establishments anywhere dedicated to the greater glory of the game." The format was fairly straight forward. Each of the 42 professional contestants teamed up with two amateurs for two 18-hole rounds. $7,000 was split between the leading professional scores, $3,000 going to the five lowest best-ball scores and $800 to the champion. The winning team of the 1959 tournament consisted of Golf's prince, still earning his crown, in professional Arnold Palmer and amateur Arthur O. Wellman is engraved on this sterling silver winner's tray, along with the tournament information and Seminole Golf Club logo. Simply put, it doesn't get much better than this. 26 1/2" x 15 1/2"
