1953 US Open 2nd Place Amateur 10K Gold Medal - Frank Stranahan - Hogan Win at Oakmont

1953 was year of Ben Hogan and Oakmont CC played a prominent part in that historical season. Hogan outdistanced Sam Snead and the field and later went on to win the British Open at Carnoustie capturing every major tournament for the season he entered. During this magical season and at one of the most iconic venues in golf, Frank Stranahan was part of the medal ceremony with Ben Hogan and Sam Snead (Runner-up) as he was honored with this 10k Gold Medal for 2nd Low Amateur in the 1953 U.S. Open! Stranahan posted four straight rounds of 75 for a score of 300 and his score was the second lowest posted by an amateur trailing only Frank Souchak’s 296.

For his efforts in the '53 U.S. Open Frank was awarded by the United States Golf Association this scalloped edged gold medal with remarkable enameling bearing the logo of U.S.G.A. on one side with the reverse carrying the following engravings:

1953
Open Championship
Oakmont Country Club
Oakmont, Pa.
2nd Amateur Scorer
Score 300
Frank Stranahan

The lower portion of the verso side of this 1 1/2" diameter treasure carries the stamping 10k indicating its gold content. Anything Hogan related bearing 1953 & Oakmont is highly desirable amongst golf collectors - this may be the only opportunity you’ll get to own a gold medal presented at this event as Hogan’s medals are permanently housed at the USGA museum in Far Hills, NJ. A wonderful and rare find. 1 7/8" diameter
