1949 USGA Walker Cup Player Contestant Badge Owned By Charles Kocsis
From the decorated amateur Chuck Kocsis's estate comes this 1949 USGA Walker Cup at Winged Foot Country Club contestant badge with the green ring encircling the time-period design of the prized player identifier. The 1949 Walker Cup matches were the 12th time the two sides had met since the inception in 1922 with Ouimet appearing as a player or coach in each of them. Ouimet, well respected on both sides of the Atlantic, would become the first American to be named prestigious captain of the Royal and Ancient golf course of St. Andrews. The 1949 Walker Cup matches were held by the United States Golf Association at Winged Foot just outside New York City with the U.S. squad winning the two day event (August 19-20) by a 10-2 margin. Stranahan starred for the U.S. squad teaming with Kocsis for a 2&1 Friday foursome win and then trouncing the reigning British Amateur Champion Max McCready 6&5. The largest margin of victory in the Saturday singles matches. It remains in good condition, as depicted in the accompanying lot photos. A copy of the original letter of provenance for this lot and the 1938 and 1957 Walker Cup contestants badges not included in this lot will accompany Kocsis' 1949 player badge and a picture of it is added to the listing.
