1948 The Amateur Golf Championship At Royal St. George's Bracket/Pairings Sheet - Filled Out
Filled out by a spectator at Royal St George closely taking in the golf tournament action, one name is penned from his first round matchup all the way to the finish line - Frank Stranahan or as he was known in the states as the "Toledo Strong Man." Frank Stranahan was a favorite to win any event he entered, be it amateur or pro, on either side of the Atlantic. The 25 year-old Stranahan won his first 'Major' at Royal St. George for the 1948 British Amateur. He was coming off near misses in 1947 finishing second in both the Masters and British Open. This time he closed the deal. In addition the taste of success in the 36 hole final match came against a past rival British Walker Cupper, Charlie Stowe. Stranahan would back it up with a matching performance at St Andrews two years later for his second Amateur Championship. 22 5/8" x 35"
