1941 Hagen's PGA Ryder Team vs Bobby Jones' Challenge Team at Detroit GC Signed Pairings Sheet
Simply put, a truly exquisite piece of golf history lies here in our June Auction lot #1. Dated August 24, 1941, the final day of competition, this is a signed Single Matches Pairings sheet between Walter Hagen's PGA Ryder Cup Team and Bobby Jones' Challenge Team. Signed in time-period ink by Captains Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones, below their typed name are signatures of the hand-picked teams totaling 20 golfers. The two columns of ten represent the matches that would be taking place. Playing captain Bobby Jones signed it his his full 'Robert T Jones Jr.' signature on below his typed name in addition to next to captain Hagen. The PGA Ryder Cup Team members who signed are Vic Ghezzi, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, Paul Runyan, Ralph Guldahl, Henry Picard, Horton Smith, Dick Metz, Harold McSpaden, and Jimmy Hines. The Challenge Team signatures include a second signature from Captain Robert T. Jones in addition to Ben Hogan, Lawson Little, Jimmy Demaret, Gene Sarazen, Clayton Heafner, Ed Dudley, Denny Shute, Johnny Bulla.
The WWII 1941 Ryder Cup Challenge matches took place between Walter Hagen's Ryder Cup Team and Bobby Jones' Challengers. During the war with Ryder Cup competition put on hold, exhibition matches brought together the greatest players of the era, including amateur Bobby Jones, who led his team to an 8½-6½ upset of the Walter Hagen led Ryder Cup Team, Aug. 23-24, 1941, at Detroit Golf Club. Also Signed By PGA President Tom Walsh, Signed in black ink, framed and matted, and in excellent condition. Comes with a letter of authenticity #BB45770 from James Spence Authentication. Ink has discolored slightly due to age. Frame measures 17" x 19 1/2" A letter of from PGA Historian Bob Denney will accompany this lot.
