1938 Masters Tournament Champions 10k Gold Medal Presented to Henry Picard

Awarded for one of the highest honors in sport for the very first playing under the new title of 'The Masters Tournament' - we are happy to unveil the 1938 Champions 10k Gold Medal Presented to Henry Picard. The affable 'Pick' would be only the fourth winner in the fifth Masters Tournament. To be the best you have to beat the best and Picard took that advice, conquering Harry Cooper, Paul Runyan, Byron Nelson and the others shooting -3 for the tournament. Picard lead after three rounds and finished it off by carding a final round 70 to win by two. Picard participated in two Ryder Cups - 1935 and 1937 and he won the 1939 PGA Championship. Ben Hogan considered Picard his best professional friend having dedicated his book “Power Golf” to Henry who, among other things, helped Hogan with his grip and recommended Hogan for a prestigious professional post at Hershey Country Club in 1941.

Without question, the 1938 Masters Gold Winner’s Medal presented here that once belonged to Henry Picard is an absolute gem. Medals were not awarded by the Masters Tournament to winners until 1951 and past champions were also given their 10k Gold Medals in 1951. We are of the opinion Picard received 2 Masters Gold Winner’s Medal during his lifetime. The first was given to him in 1951 and the medal presented in this auction was obtained by Picard subsequent to 1975 but the exact date of receipt by him is unknown.

We know this Official Masters 10k Gold Medal came from Picard’s nephew’s estate. Picard gave this medal to his nephew, Frank P. Kanapaux, III who bequeathed it to his son, Frank P. Kanapaux, IV, who later sold it to a Florida Sports Memorabilia dealer in 2008. Generally there are 2 styles of Masters Medals - the older medals do not have a driveway surrounding Founders Circle on the front of the medal. This medal, however, displays the driveway around Founders Circle which means it was likely given to Picard after 1975 (for example, Jack Nicklaus’ 1972 & 1975 Masters Gold Medals do not have the driveway but his 1977 & 1981 Masters Silver Medals and his 1986 Gold Medal have the driveway).

Why did Picard have 2 Gold Masters Champion Medals? We can only speculate that either the first one from 1951 was lost or misplaced and he ordered another one or he wanted a second medal for some other unknown reason. In any event, this 10k Gold Medal is the real deal having originated from Augusta National and was personally owned and possessed by Picard himself!

This Medal comes in its original display box and measures 1.75” in diameter and weighs in at 1.7 ounces of 10k gold! The condition is near mint and retains the superior detail and design of other post 1975 Winner’s Medals. The front displays the Clubhouse and the back is beautifully engraved “Masters Tournament” and “Henry Picard 1938.” Bid early and often on this museum quality piece!
