1937 USGA Chairman Signed Letter to U.S. Amateur Champion Estelle Lawson Page
Presented here is an Autograph Letter Signed (ALS), two pages on a single sheet of official United States Golf Association (USGA) letterhead, to Estelle Lawson Page, golf great and notably 1937 U.S. Amateur Champion. The letter is authored by Connie Sullivan (Mrs. Willard P. Sullivan) in her capacity as Chairman of the Women's Committee. Dated "November 20th" from Ashland, Virginia, the correspondence is addressed to "Estelle, Dear" (Estelle Lawson Page, the 1937 U.S. Women's Amateur champion). Sullivan writes a poignant message combining personal grief with professional golf administration. She expresses great pride in Page's performance in Memphis but explains her silence was due to the "sudden" and "devastating" death of her husband, Willard. Sullivan notes she has just returned from Savannah and is "getting back into harness," requesting Page's tournament records since 1935 for USGA reports. She concludes by discussing team selections and Page's status as a "plus handicap" player. Included is the original mailing envelope addressed to "Mrs Julius Page Jr., Chapel Hill, N. C.," bearing an Ashland, Virginia postmark dated November 20, and a purple three-cent postage stamp.
