1937 Newport Country Club Sterling Silver Tiffany & Co. Victory Medal Won By Jess W. Sweetser
Presented by Henry O. Havemeyer on behalf of one of the most exclusive clubs in golf to, US and British Amateur winner, Jess W. Sweetser was this very Tiffany & Company Sterling Silver medal in 1937. Henry Havemeyer was the brother of Theodore Havemeyer who presented the first US Amateur Trophy at the Newport Country Club in 1895 as the club's co-founder and first chairman at their establishment date two years prior. Theodore Havemeyer is still the namesake for the US Amateur first place prize 140 years later.
Jess Sweetser won the 1922 US Amateur, defeating Bobby Jones convincingly 8 & 7 in the semi-finals prior to Chick Evans in the finals 3 &2, as well as the 1926 British Amateur Championships. Sweetser, then living in New York, shot a 74 2-over par in the Newport Country Club Invitation Golf Tournament for the 'Victory' medal honors along with Bobby Knowles Jr of Brookline and Tommy Goodwin of Monroe, NY.
The front of this medal depicts in shallow relief a detailed winged angel female figure with right arm outstretched holding wreath of laurels and palm branch in left. This figure's origins date back to at least the 1840's and the Sutlej Medal which was issued to officers of the British Army. The verso includes 'Newport Country Club - Presented By - Henry O. Havemeyer - Won By - Jess W. Sweetser - 1937.' Tiffany & Co.'. is found below that and 'Sterling' hallmark is found stamped into the bottom edge. 1 1/2" diameter and 32 grams
