1936 US Open at Baltusrol Golf Club Saturday Final Round Ticket #2303 - Rare

Bright red, with jet black print and exceedingly rare is this nearly pristine circular with scalloped edges FINAL round Saturday 1936 US Open ticket issued by the USGA for the Baltusrol Golf Club tournament. The hard work started before the tournament even began, as eventual champion Tony Manero had to enter a playoff among qualifiers to get in. But Manero won the 40th US Open with (at the time) a record low score of 282. Among the best to never win a major, Harry Cooper, appeared to have the Championship won with a score of 284 - two strokes under the record set in 1916 by Chick Evans. Yet Manero carded the only final tally in the 60's with a 67 in the final round and overtook Cooper by two strokes. Manero was persuaded by Gene Sarazen to to play with him (Manero's idol) to east the nerves - it worked. Tony Manero's low mark held for another 12 years until Hogan eclipsed it in 1948. Scarcity and condition, both bode well for this once $3.30 pre-WWII ducat celebrating Tony Manero's career-defining moment and US Open host rotation Baltusrol's first four-digit winner's purse.
