On most serious collectors want-lists of US Open tickets and VIP admittance badges there is usually a glaring hole in the collection that is the year 1934. Maybe it has to do with it being the height of the Depression, when many Americans were more concerned with finding there next meal rather then attending golf matches. Finally an example of a 1934 US Open badge has been found, and it is a beauty. Coming from the collection of a past P.G.A. professional hailing from the Philadelphia area. Written on the ribbon is 'U.S. National Open Golf Championship Merion Cricket Club Ardmore, PA - June 7 - 8 - 9, 1934". The reverse of the pin retains its original back paper inset "James Spencer & Co. Badges, Buttons, & C. 22 N Sixth St Philadelphia". The celluloid pin (PGA designation) is 1 1/2" diameter, with the ribbons length being 3 1/2"(please note wear, fraying to ribbon)these items along with the pin back are all three original in all respects. US Open collectors will be immediately at attention when they see this badge with unique P.G.A. designation. Please see photo below of Bobby Jones who attended the 1934 Open as a non-playing guest wearing a similar badge with ribbon. Surely, while we can't verify other known examples, this badge after the auction will remain high on most collectors want lists except one.
