1934 US Open Championship at Merion Cricket Club Program - Olin Dutra Winner
Offered here is the visually appealing mint green 1934 US Open at Merion program adorned by cover art depicting the Golf House on the East Course. The significant 1934 US Open was both the first major conducted by the United States Golf Association at Merion and the first year that both Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson played in a US Open. The "Slammin' Spaniard" Olin Dutra came back from eight shots back to beat Gene Sarazen and claimed the Open title. For the 33-year-old it marked his second Major championship victory after having triumphed in the 1932 PGA Championship at Keller Golf Club. This early program is intact and in overall good condition with some expected front and back cover wear, along with edging depicted in the accompanying lot photos. Open the cover and you will find the portraits of the early USGA officers, Merion Cricket Club board members, the pairings sheet of golfers in the championship field for Thursday and Friday rounds and black and white images of 'Former National Open Champions' including Bobby Jones (only four years senior this publication), Francis Ouimet and Walter Hagen. Please consider this US Open publication a must for program collectors, an exemplar initially sourced from the hallowed Ardmore, Pennsylvania grounds and entry into the pre-WWII sub-category.
