1934 Robert P. Jones (Bobby's Dad) Presenting Horton Smith 1934 Masters Winners Check Wire Photo

There's a first for everything - and two in this photo! This wire photo depicts the very first Masters Tournament and it's very first champion Horton Smith presented with his winning "trophy" by Bobby Jones' father Robert P. Jones for the monumental triumph! Smith would not receive a green jacket, trophy or even a medal at the conclusion of the 1934 Masters, but a $1,500 check from senior Jones containing the cumulative funds after a passing of the hat from ANGC member to member. What Robert P. Jones said the moment of the presentation that had Smith, Jones and select patrons grinning is unknown.

Bobby Jones had pulled it off! He constructed his dream course and the tournament in which would gather the top golfers on it. Used for media outlets nationwide covering Bobby Jones' first tournament on the course, this crystal clear close photo contains the extensive caption verso as well as the now lighter timestamp from that day 'MAR 25 1934 upside down at the bottom of that caption. Horton Smith is wearing his coat in the same way as when he shook Bobby Jones hand (arms not in sleeves) leading us to believe that this happened during the very same 'trophy ceremony.' It an exceptional piece of Masters and golf history, transporting the viewer back in time - quickly approaching the century mark. The photograph remains in good, unchipped condition with three spots of slight discoloration failing to take away from the presentation. 8x6."

Verso caption reads in type: Horton Smith Accepts A Check: Horton Smith, Chicago professional, won The Master's Invitation Golf Tournament at Augusta, GA, March 25 and $1,500 along with the honor over a field of experts that included the great Bobby Jones. Bobby's Father, Robert P. Jones, is shown presenting the victor's check to Smith, who shot a 284 for the 72 holes. Smith is at the right. 3-25-34. 8" x 6"
