1932 US Open at Fresh Meadow Contestant Badge #57 - Gene Sarazen Winner
After completing the first two rounds, Gene Sarazen found himself 5 shots behind the leader. That didn't last long as he set numerous course records en route to his 2nd Major Championship victory just in that month. He also won the British Open in England in 1932 a mere two weeks earlier, June 8-10. The tournament was the 36th U.S. Open, held June 23–25 at Fresh Meadow Country Club in Flushing, New York. It was Gene's fifth of seven major titles in his career, 10 years after The Squire's first US Open win.
Time-period United States Golf Association tournament contestant badge design with scalloped edges and 'Contestant' headlining the badge in green enamel, with a blue circle of like composition. An ornate gold-tone badge representing the most challenging of all tournament credentials, the unlikely hobby entrant boasts strong definition, with tournament specific verbiage encircling the intertwined 'USGA' in shallow relief. The verso pin still works and below loop is not only intact, but holds the #57 player number designation which is rather uncommon to see. These are welcomed words for early contestant bade collectors, pre WWII, pining for an example from the New York-based Fresh Meadow contest won by the first modern day Grand Slam entrant and Empire State native.
