1930 US Amateur at Merion Cricket Club Program - Bobby Jones Completes Grand Slam!

Offered in this lot we showcase an official 1930 US Amateur program from the fourth and final leg of the Grand Slam of Majors won by Bobby Jones - at the historic Merion Golf Club! George Trevor sportswriter for the New York Sun would phrase Jones' four Major triumphs in 1930 as such, "stormed the impregnable quadrilateral of golf." This is one of the tougher golf programs to locate in any condition, and like Jones' performance in 1930, this one excels. This publication produced by the United States Golf Association also provides great insight to a year of Bobby Jones's previously unaccomplished feats.

The heavy favorite after finishing the medalist after two rounds of qualifying (yes Bobby Jones had to qualify to play this tournament), that pressure created the Atlantan's diamond match-play performance that would ensue. It started with out-dueling C. Ross Somerville, Fred Hoblitzel and Fay Coleman, prior to a lopsided 9 & 8 victory over US Amateur champion Jess Sweetser in the semifinals and an 8 & 7 finals win over Eugene Homans to hoist the Havemeyer Trophy. Jones promptly retired from competitive golf shortly there after, focusing much of his time and energy on the construction of a golf club in Augusta, GA named Augusta National Golf Club.

A work of art is the program's cover featuring an in-color depiction of Merion's Golf House of the East Course above the 'Thirty-Fourth National Amateur Championship - September 22,23,24,25,26,27 1930 - Merion Cricket Club - Ardmore, Pennsylvania.' This revered reader remains in good condition with some overall cover surface wear, including a diagonal crease from the top down to the middle of the right side. There is some very slight discoloration on the inside of the front and back cover page due to way of production and common of other known examples of this intact program and stated for accuracy purposes only. Please see the accompanying photos to the left which will give the bidder a better understanding of this seldom seen program exact condition. The gold standard for golf programs and Bobby Jones collections.
