1930 Bobby Jones US Amateur at Merion Grand Slam Final Type I Photo PSA LOA
Snapped at just the right time, of the right subject, at just the right tournament, Merion Golf Club was this 8x10 PSA Type I photo from Bobby Jones' final leg of the grand slam, The US Amateur! Crystal clear, with the Merion Clubhouse landmark of golf architecture in the background, Jones is in a statuesque post-swing post on the tee box. It depicts the look of the confident but not cocky Jones, with the sun highlighting his facial features and patented center part as depicted in lot photo #2. The finest of time-period attire is found just past the wall separating the course from the walkway. It is stamped on the verso by the Underwood and Underwood New York, New York photography studio, along with handwritten notations including identification of the significant subject in 'Bobby Jones.'
Sportswriter for the New York Sun George Trevor would phrase Jones' four Major triumphs in 1930 as such, "stormed the impregnable quadrilateral of golf." Each competitor posed beside him had won a US Amateur prior, those being Jimmy Johnston (1929), Jess Sweetser (1922) and Max Marston (1923). 1930 also represented Bobby Jones' record 5th US Amateur title, surpassing Jerome Travers' four wins between 1907 and 1913. Jones retired from competitive golf shortly there after, focusing much of his time and energy on the construction of a golf club in Augusta, GA named Augusta National Golf Club. 8" x 10"
