1930 Bobby Jones Grand Slam US Am Putting On 9th Hole at Merion in Final Rd PSA Type I Photo
A feat of photography, only to be matched and surpassed by the gentleman pictured putting in the final round required to complete the Grand Slam in 1930. Best telling the story of Bobby Jones' US Amateur win at Merion for the fourth leg of that year from a visual sense are Type One photos in which PSA encapsulated and authenticated this as. No wonder the category has become one of the most popular in collecting. This image captures Jones putting on the 9th green in the final afternoon round in the match he would win 8 and 7. The crystal clear shot shows Jones with the putter extended, navigating shadows with the gallery encircling the putting surface. George Trevor sportswriter for the New York Sun would phrase Jones' four Major triumphs in 1930 as such, "stormed the impregnable quadrilateral of golf."
The heavy favorite after finishing the medalist after two rounds of qualifying (yes Bobby Jones had to qualify to play this tournament), that pressure created the Atlantan's diamond match-play performance that would ensue. It started with out-dueling C. Ross Somerville, Fred Hoblitzel and Fay Coleman, prior to a lopsided 9 & 8 victory over US Amateur champion Jess Sweetser in the semifinals and an 8 & 7 finals win over Eugene Homans to hoist the Havemeyer Trophy. Jones promptly retired from competitive golf shortly there after, focusing much of his time and energy on the construction of a golf club in Augusta, GA named Augusta National Golf Club.9th hole of the afternoon match.
