1929 California State Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Runner-Up Trophy to FC Stevens

Here we have the trophy awarded to Stevens for his runner up finish at the historic Pebble Beach Golf Links. The 1929 California State Amateur Golf Tournament concluded with Jack F. Neville securing his fifth title. Neville, had previously won the championship in 1912, 1913, 1919, and 1922. Neville defeated a young F.C. Stevens of Los Angeles 2 and 1.

It looked like Neville would easily win when he went into the final round 9 up. Stevens however would win the next six holes before eventually succumbing to Neville on the 35th hole. Neville would have seemed to have had an edge in this match having intimate knowledge of the Pebble Beach course which he co designed with Douglas Grant in 1919, although a year before this match H. Chandler Egan would do an extensive revision of the Neville/Grant design.

Also in 1929, Pebble Beach hosted the U.S. Amateur Championship, marking the first time the USGA conducted a major championship west of the Mississippi River. Notably, Bobby Jones, the two-time defending champion and current U.S. Open titleholder, was unexpectedly defeated in the first round by Johnny Goodman, an unheralded player from Omaha, Nebraska. These events underscored Pebble Beach's prominence in American golf during that era, highlighting both the achievements of local talents like Neville and the course's growing reputation as a venue for significant national competitions. This 20 ounce (base weighted) beautiful sterling trophy stands 11 inches tall. The engraving on the trophy reads” 1929, California Amateur Championship, Runner Up, Pebble Beach, Cal. The trophy is further adorned with The California Golf Association emblem. Overall a great California golf and Pebble Beach historical trophy that would make an excellent addition to any collection.
