1928 US Open at Olympia Fields 'Chicago, The Golfing Center of the World' by USGA President Melvin A. Traylor Typed Welcome Letter

Past USGA President in 1928 Melvin Traylor, positioned between William C. Fownes Jr. of Oakmont and Findlay Douglas of Apawamis Club, N.Y., naturally gravitated towards the golf clubs in the Chicago area as he was from Glen View Club in Illinois. Unsurprising is it that he typed this welcome letter titled 'Chicago, The Golfing Center of the World.' during his one year term of 1928. The two pager written to welcome guests to the 1928 US Open held at Olympia Fields CC in which Johnny Farrell would outduel Bobby Jones in a playoff. Traylor starts with the history of golf in Chicago mentioning "The history of golf in Chicago is interesting, for the English and Scotch will think us to be mere babies in age. But we have come a long way and even the British known that we have golf intermingled with out stockyards." Seven early clubs are mentioned as pioneers in the area, including Midlothian Flossmoor, Riverside and others. The typed pages are on brittle nearly century old pages, with one taped together as shown in accompanying lot photos. This is from the collection that included Chick Evans personal correspondence and other personal documents.
