1928 PGA Championship at Baltimore CC Five Farms Course Contestant Badge - Leo Diegel Winner - Rare
Containing dark red enamel is this rare 1928 PGA Championship badge containing the Baltimore Country Club Five Farms Course in which the matches played out on. With every major championship comes a great story. This 1928 PGA Championship at Baltimore Country Club Program represents one of those that involves the defending champion and program cover choice Walter Hagen. The Haig had demonstrated his complete and utter dominance over the PGA Championship field the prior four contests of the match play tournament, with his name along on the far right of each tournament bracket after play was concluded. Walter Hagen was finally dethrone in 1928 at Baltimore Country Club, by US Ryder Cup teammate Leo Diegel. When it came time to present Diegel the Wanamaker trophy for slaying Goliath, it was no where to be found. Hagen had kept the touring trophy with him for four consecutive years, told the story of its disappearance occurring in Chicago taxi cab sometime along the way. The displaced original Wanamaker trophy would later be located in the warehouse of Hagen clubs manufacturing partner L.A. Young. The difficult contestant badge is in excellent, with only slight wear on verso pinback as seen in the pictures. 1" diameter
