1928 Grover Page Political Cartoon Relief Print and Double-Sided Wood Printing Block
This lot features a framed relief print of a political cartoon and its corresponding double-sided wood printing block. The print, a relief-style illustration likely produced from the woodblock, depicts a golfer identified as VOTER at a tee labeled PRIMARY. The landscape contains a sand trap labeled APATHY and a green in the distance with a flag marked ELECTION and a slope marked RUN-OFF. The name GROVER PAGE is printed in the upper right corner of the illustration. The reverse of the frame features a gold circular adhesive label reading Property of # 948 Langley Golf Museum.
The accompanying heavy wood printing block is double-sided and mounted on a modern wooden display stand. One side of the block features the golf-themed VOTER cartoon in reverse, as is standard for relief printing blocks. The opposite side of the block features an entirely different political cartoon depicting an upside-down elephant representing the GOP. The elephant holds a bottle with the words ISLAND RHODE carved in reverse. The year 1928 is carved into the bottom center of the elephant side.
