1926 USGA Women’s Amateur Championship at Merion Cricket Club Contestant Badge
The 30th USGA Women’s Amateur Championship was played in the fall from September 27 to October 2nd at what was then known as the Merion Cricket Club.
The title that O. B. Keeler gave his November 1926 article on the tournament the was ‘Mother’s Day at Merion. “ This title reflected the fact the two finalists, Helen Stetson and Elizabeth Goss were both mothers. They had gotten to the final by beating younger opponents. A soggy Merion proved an extremely tough test for the women. As an example, the medalist in the qualifying round was Glenna Collett with a whopping 81.
The 39 year old Helen Stetson would go on to defeat Goss 3 & 1 in a ragged, rainy final contest but Stetson’s steady game off the tee combined with a fine short game would win her the title. She became only the fourth married woman champion in the history of the tournament.
This badge remains in overall excellent condition with intact pin to the rear and even retains its’ original celluloid tag which identified the player it associated with it.
Overall a scarce historical badge from a significant Merion and women’s championship tournament.
