1925 PGA Championship at Olympia Fields Program - Walter Hagen Win - Only Known Publicly Offered Example!
The wait is over. "None known" is noted in the guiding industry comprehensive Gilchrist's Golf Collectibles compiled with Mark Emerson to the right of this line item, the 1925 PGA Championship at Olympia Fields program. That was until this example, fresh to the hobby and uncovered from the estate of then Olympia Fields Country Club member and eventual President in 1937-1938 Horace P. Ramey. We didn't even know what the front cover looked like, as this roaring (19)20's epeheral enigma is the only publicly offered example from Walter Hagen's repeat victory. With the exception of the host club's archives, this is the only example we are aware of!
"The Golf Mecca of the World - Olympia Fields" as it was self proclaimed opened for play in 1915 with the North Course designed by champion golfer Willie Park Jr. This was the first of four major championships it hosted, alongside with a Senior US Open, US Amateur and Women's PGA Championship. Walter Hagen would defend his 1924 PGA Championship title for for his third and seventh of a record (at retirment) 11 majors. Hagen defeated 'Wild' Bill Melhorn with a dominant 6 and 5 win in the finals of the matchplay event. The Haig was virtually unstopable in the format, 20-1 in the 1920's with 10 match victories in a row.
Pages 16 and 17 open up for a Walter Hagen spread, both a time-period advertisment for men's clothier Henry C. Lytton & Sons endorsed by the star of the tournament leaning on his club and a headshot artist depiction along with 'Present Professional Golfers' Association Champion.' This program remains in good condition, with all pages and spine tight with small expected breaks on ends. There is slight edge wear and rounded corners, with the accompanying lot photos giving a detailed condition report. Here is likely your one chance at Walter Hagen's 7th major winning program from the '25 PGA at Olympia Fields just outside of Chicago.
