1924 US Open at Oakland Hills Official Program - Only One Known - Rare
Simply stated, we have never offered or even seen an example of the 1924 US Open program before as this lot presents the only example known. This recent find carries vibrant graphics depicting the clubhouse and golfers shadowing the green with popping color on the cover of this tournament publication originally available for purchase at Oakland Hills at the USGA's Open Championship. Runner-up Bobby Jones' title defense would be spoiled by the "relatively unknown" Englishman Cyril Walker. Walker would improbably take the title by three strokes after a 54-hole tie at the top with the great Bobby Jones. Jones' final day 78 hiccup didn't cut it.
It cannot be stressed enough how scarce this program is to find. It is sourced from a first-time consignor residing in the North East region of the United States with family ties to a teaching pro and tournament attendee. Minimal writing on interior pairing page notating scores for golfers like Bobby Jones (Amateur) with a 147 along with other contestants by a devoted spectator and a single cover crease in the corner are both noted for accuracy purposes only. Less emphasis is put on condition the rarer an artifact is, and while this is the only example of its kind the tight binding and overall condition is sparkling with all things considered.
