1924 US Open Final Rd Ticket - Walker vs Jones - Only One Known
Simply stated, we have never offered or even seen an example of the 1924 US Open FINAL round ticket before as this lot presents the only example known. This means of admission into Oakland Hills for the USGA's Open Championship's third and fourth round played in the morning and afternoon that Friday, June 6th. Runner-up Bobby Jones' title defense would be spoiled by the "relatively unknown" Englishman Cyril Walker. Walker would improbably take the title by three strokes after a 54-hole tie at the top with the great Bobby Jones. Jones' final day 78 hiccup didn't cut it.
It cannot be stressed enough how scarce this yellow ticket is to find. It was rescued from a scrapbook by an antique sports collector, professionally extracted as to not succumb to even the slightest bit of paper loss on the verso. Strong, black print of the USGA Great Seal, 'National Open Golf Championship' along with the site, final round date and the $2.00 admission fee plus 10 percent revenue tax which was charged to the ducat's original owner and tournament patron. The original string was taken off the old fashion way leaving an opening at the top of the hole and ticket, along with slight creasing on ticket itself both detailed in the accompanying lot photos. Less emphasis is put on condition the rarer an artifact is, with it being a wonder that this ticket survived countless moves, life events and multiple owners over the 101 years since issuance.
