1915 US Amateur at CC of Detroit Contestant Badge - Robert Gardner Winner
Robert A Gardner outmatched fellow finalist John G Anderson 5&4, the latter playing the role of runner-up just two years prior as well. Gardner also previously duplicated his performance, winning the 1909 US Amateur as just a 19 Year old as a Sophomore at Yale. His record as the youngest winner would stand until Tiger Woods broke it by 9 months 85 years later. In good condition with slight overall, expected patina, this RARE contestant badge is complete with its original pin back. How rare is this 'USGA' issued contestant badge from 110 years ago? Roger Gilchrist's Guide to Golf Collectibles, long an industry standard print value publication, reports of 'None Known' for this 1915 US Amateur issued for the pre-WWI contest at Country Club of Detroit.
Time-period United States Golf Association tournament contestant badge design with scalloped edges and 'Contestant' headlining the badge in white enamel, with a red circle of like composition. An ornate gold-tone badge representing the most challenging of all tournament credentials, the unlikely hobby entrant boasts strong definition, with tournament specific verbiage encircling the intertwined 'USGA' in shallow relief. The verso pin still works, welcomed words for early contestant bade collectors pining for an example from the Country Club of Detroit contest won by two-time US Amateur Champion Robert Gardner.
